Designer Babies - Like It Or Not, Here They Come

There are definitely two strong ways to look at this issue, as a good thing or a bad thing. There was one case to show the good thing about designer babies that happened witht the Whitley family. They had a baby that died at 9 months of age from spinal muscular atrophy. PGD (Preimplantation Genetics Diagnosis) was able to tell the parents that they would have a one in four chance with creating a child with the same disease. After trying to cure diseases, gender was the next on the list to design. Then after this will be eye color, complexion, and even hair color. However a Fertility Institute can not grant a trait to the child that neither one of the parents have. Ironically even though the U.S. is one of the more heavily regulated countries, PGD is perfectly legal.
On December 7th UFC 107 is going to take place at the FedEx Forum in Memphis. UFC is the Ultimate Fighting Championship and it is getting more and more popular every day. Quinton Rampage Jackson, a UFC fighter, was supposed to be fighting at this event, however he recently decided to retire. He is from Memphis and would have been fighting at his home town. It was very dissappointing to me, because he talked so much stuff about his opponent Rashad Evans and he is not even going to back up his words. The main event will be BJ Penn verses Diego Sanchez for the lightweight title. It will be a huge fight and a good one at that. I am not really positive if I am going to attend the event, because tickets are extremely expensive. My uncle is searching around if we can get any good ticket deals, and if we do I am sure this will an awesome experience. If I do not go, I will without a doubt watch the fights on pay per view.
I really do not like the rain at all. It is not fun having to get soaked before getting to your class. If it was up to me, I would make the sun appear everyday and there would be no rainfall. If it is just sprinkling a little bit, I am okay with that. When it pours and lasts a long time, that is why I would cross the line. I do bring an umbrella, but ironically enough, I leave it in my car when it starts to pour. I am just going to have to start taking it everywhere I go just in case to be safe. I am going to follow the saying "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst."

"Designer Babies" Ethical?
March 3, 2009
CBS

A fertility specialist said possibly by next year they will be 100% sure if you will have a boy or a girl and 80% sure about what eye color the child will have. Another person did not agree with this person about the eye color, but did say that he was on the right path. In years to come we will eventually be certain on the eye color, height, freckles, etc. The rich will be using these technologies and they are going to just increase in power. The poor will not be able to use these so they will just stay low while the richer people get even more dominant in power. One problem ahead would be if the parents paid for the child to be intelligent, and that child did not succeed. The parents would be mad that they invested all of that money for nothing.

Outside Event 2

Tonight I rode with April to go see Jill McCorkle read a story from her book "Going Away Shoes." I went to see Robert Root a couple weeks ago and was hoping that this would be a little more entertaining. When we got there I noticed the place was very small and it seemed to be packed from the outside. I walked in and there was like twenty plus people packed into this small front area. I luckily found a stool to sit on but it was rather uncomfortable throughout the reading. As the author began to read the story "Surrender" I noticed her voice seemed pretty quiet and calm. I did not really get the idea of the story, but I noticed many of the audience members laughing a lot. I was not expecting the language to be how it was either. The story was really crazy and I was confused by it at times. It seemed like she read way more than she thought she was going to read too. Overall the night went okay and I enjoyed hearing the author read from her book.

who i'd like to meet

If I was able to meet anyone on the planet right now I would have to pick Fedor Emelianenko. He is Russian and he is the undisputed heavyweight champion in mma. I believe he is the toughest guy on the Earth. His record is 30 - 1 and the one loss he has came from a 15 second illegal elbow stoppage. His opponent did an illegal elbow and it gave a deep cut above his eye and the referree would not let him continue. If it was not for this "fluke" he would have an undefeated record right now, but it does not really matter because he is still ranked number one. I really like doing mma and watching it, and Fedor is among the elites likes Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Muhammad Ali. He is somewhere around 6'1 235 but has fought guys of all sizes including a 7'2 350 lb. Korean named Hong Man Choi. He does not brag either, he is humble with all of his fights, and he is so highly-respected among other fighters. Fedor's next fight will be against Brett Rogers on November 7th.

Evaluation on Designer Babies

I am going to be doing my evaluation essay on the topic of Designer Babies. I think this will be an interesting topic because it can be a good thing but at the same time a bad thing. Some good things coming from this could be to prevent from diseases and disorders. Also you could try to make the baby specifically how you want it. However I think that some negatives that will come from this is discrimination. The new babies would be a better version and the old would be looked down on. I just think there would be a separation that would occur. I also do not think anyone is perfect or should be except God.
I am a little frightened to go too far out into the ocean. I do have a fear of sharks and anything else that is able to kill you in the water. My fear of sharks probably came a lot from movies such as Deep Blue Sea and Jaws. I mean sharks are just so big and intimidating. The great white shark has about 150 teeth. I really don't know how someone can not be afraid of that. They say that the chances of being attacked by a shark are just one in 11.5 million, but I am so not thinking about that while I am in the water. The odds go right out the window and I always have my eye out.

Bad Times

Last year was my senior year at DeSoto Central High School and I had played on the soccer team since sophomore year. My friend Ben and I were the two captains for our team and we had a reputation of being one one of the best teams in the area. Well the season started okay for me, I got a couple goals and assists and everything seemed good. About a quarter after the start of our season I was having some sort of injury. I had found out that I had a torn right quadricep. They told me that it was possibly from not stretching enough or just working too hard. Sadly to say I could not perform up to my highest potential. It was not a good time watching my team mates and not being able to give them my best effort. The process of healing really never happened. I stayed sore and somewhat injured for the remainder of the season. I just could not tell them I have to sit out. I mean it was my last year there and it was my time. We did not reach the playoffs but we did play some good soccer. I was glad I chose to play and help my team as much as I could.

bad luck or?

Well my grandmother has started buying lottery tickets for the jackpot. We have not come close at all in our recent buyings. We have been buying them for probably the last 4 weeks. Well nobody had won the jackpot in a while and the prize was up to one hundred and ninety million dollars. I would not even know what to buy with all that money anyways. I usually reminded her to buy them and she did but no one won. Then this saturday came around and I forgot all about it and did not tell her to buy one. Unfortunately for us, someone won the lottery that night. I know the chances of winning are about 1 in 100 million but I just thought it was really strange how that happened and believe we missed our opportunity. The one day we forget to buy them, someone happens to win. Hopefully we have better luck this week!
I recently got an email telling me of the amount of service hours that I have to complete for my scholarship. I had totally forget about the service hours I needed. I am supposed to complete seventy five hours before the academic year is over. I am planning on looking around to see what all I can do to accomplish this as soon as possible. I do not want to wait until next semester and then having to be in a huge rush all the time. The email just got me a little worried because I was really stressing at the moment since I seemed to be loaded with work. I just am going to try to not procrastinate when it comes to these hours.

Robert Root Outside Event 1

While arriving at Mitchell Hall I was not sure of how the night was going to go. There were more people there than I had anticipated being there. Then a woman introduced Robert Root and he started speaking. At first he seemed a little uncomfortable and nervous but gradually settled in as the night went on. One of the things that stuck out the most to me was when he talked about the One Hundred Days Journal. He would pick one hundred days of his life and specifically write about that day and why it is of significance. I thought that was a very interesting way to write. Also I found out that his son was the creator of Robot Chicken. It kind of threw me off guard because I would have never of expected it. Overall the night went well and I learned some new things about and from Mr. Root.
